The Eldfell volcano on the Icelandic island of Heimaey turned 40 last week, which means it is not long before I arrive at that birthday as well…

At 30 I found a crystal shard, either quartz or window glass covered in a thin slip of molten rock, on the slopes of the volcano. Upon return this summer, marking almost a decade more of life, I happened upon agates in the ‘red lava’ from 1973.
